Setting Realistic Goals for Yourself
So you've seen all the ads and the come hither looks of the internet. You are bored with your daily routine and want the riches promised by the home-based business on the internet. Well, welcome to the club. But beware, there be monsters in here. Before you dive in to the murky waters of internet marketing you will need a wee bit of instruction to avoid the sharks that lie in wait. You see anytime there is a promise of riches you can bet there will parasites destined to relieve you of your life savings without so much as a how do you do. They will promise riches to the tune of thousands each day and only having to put in a fraction of the time you now spend earning your scratch. So where in lies the problem? Although there are billions of people out there surfing the internet, there are millions trying to make money. This makes for a very crowded space and the opportunities for getting noticed are dwindling as well.
So now that you are sufficiently discouraged you can now approach the enterprise with a good deal of realism. Setting goals for your efforts, attainable goals that is will be more enjoyable. I know many people are itching to dump the day job but a better approach might be to shoot for a decent second income. At least at first so you don't overwhelm yourself and eventually give up before you even get started.
What does an attainable goal look like so you will recognize it? Well, you should approach this venture as you would any business. Personally, I have opted not to incur any significant debt to get started because these are uncharted waters and the chance for success is their but it is by no means easy. You should first set out to determine exactly what it is you want to peddle to the world. Unlike opening a shop in your village (or town, city, whatever) where you can easily determine what businesses might do well. Looking at the internet is a whole different beast to conquer. Let's say you live in medium town USA and you see a part of time that is sorely lacking a gas station. With the proper funding, it is not that difficult to make a go of it and have a reasonable expectation of some success.
However, on the internet how do you determine what is needed? You can't just go driving around to say ah, a doughnut shop would do well here since there aren't any doughnut shops within 50 miles of this location. On the internet, there are 57,500,000 search results relating to donuts according to Google. Doughnuts might not be the best idea for a site so you try limiting the scope a bit. Search engines can be very useful in determining what searches yield manageable results. This is referred to as search engine optimization and requires identifying a niche or special area of concentration.
Once you identify the niche you are interested in, knowledgeable about (or willing to learn) how do you get started? Conventional knowledge would indicate a website is required at this point. This will send the most optimistic running for the hills. Even the most technically minded will be perplexed at this point because you can have the best colors, navigation controls and flashy animations but without compelling content you are just spinning your wheels in the mud and going nowhere fast or at all in this case. So, now what? Well, you start writing compelling content and yes it will take time but with some planning you can put this together in a reasonable amount of time. This is where the "achievable" in achievable goals comes in. You can search around and find articles that are free to use but eventually you are going to want to make the site your own with your own flavor and style.
By sticking to attainable goals you can make strides and actually achieve some measure of success.
