What is in it for me?

Six words that send chills down my spine, What is in it for me? Recently while conversing with a close friend these words were uttered and it made me think about the human condition. This really sums up most of our motivations doesn’t it? We always want to know that if we invest in this person, event or idea that we will be rewarded. Our time and effort do have worth but is that really all there is to life? Do we really have to put a dollar value on everything we do?
I believe sometimes you spend time and effort on people, places or things just for the reward of doing it. The fun is in the journey not the final destination. I would love to think that most people look beyond what they can get but in reality we are a pretty greedy bunch. For instance, taking a walk around the neighborhood can be seen as a waste of time but in actuality you would be amazed how much good can come from this simple event. You get exercise, fresh air and you never know who you may run into as you saunter through the streets.
My hope is that I will always look for ways to enhance my life without looking for the pay off. As ads are on this site, in actuality I have never made a dime but that is fine because I get the chance to share my thoughts. Honestly it would be great to get paid for this but in a lot of ways I already do.
When I hear these words (What is in it for me) it cheapens the whole situation. Imagine if the love of your life came in, you had prepared a romantic dinner and popped the question. What if her response was not Yes, not No but What is in it for me? Personally I would be devastated but maybe this has actually happened to you. I would hope that we can long further than just the bottom line and realize life is much bigger than a large bank account. Perhaps for some that is all there is to life, the accumulation of wealth. For these people, I would say get a better life. Find true purpose and find your rewards in non-monetary ways such as spending time with family, friends and make new friends.
Life is a journey that ends all too soon. Please make the most of it while you are here.
